2022 E4 Hammer
Make an E4 Hammer (Tentative Activity)
Organized by Drew Price and Machine Shop Proctors
Brief Description
ENG4 "Introduction to Engineering Design and Manufacturing" is a required course for anyone who wants to major in engineering at Mudd or has an interest in engineering design and problem solving. Part of the course requires students to learn how to use lathes, mills, drill presses, cutters, and many other tools in the Machine Shop by making a hammer.
NOTE #1: This Joy-Term activity is limited to individuals who have no intention of taking E4 and who just want to make a hammer. Students who are intending to or have to take E4 are not allowed to sign up for this activity, since the purpose of Joy-Term is to spark the joy of learning rather than to allow people to get ahead in their coursework.
NOTE #2: This Joy-Term activity is currently marked as a tentative activity as it will depend on having a certain number of Machine Shop proctors who are available during Joy-Term week.
Any Prerequisite Skills or Knowledge Needed?
No special skills or previous experience in the Machine Shop is required.
Time Footprint
Note: This activity will take a concerted amount of effort during the entire week, so it is unlikely that you'll get to do a ton of other things during Joy-Term if you select this activity. It can only be selected as your "primary" activity during Joy-Term.
Participants can expect to put in between 20-30 hours on the activity. There will be a required orientation session on Monday (time TBA). The Machine Shop will be open during the week for participants to work on their hammers under the guidance of shop proctors.
